What is Sclerotherapy?

Sclerotherapy is a medical procedure widely regarded as the gold standard for treating spider veins—those small, web-like red, blue, or purple veins visible just beneath the skin—and smaller varicose veins, which may appear twisted or bulging. The treatment involves the use of a fine needle to inject a sclerosing agent, typically a liquid or foam solution, into the targeted veins. This solution irritates the inner lining of the vein, causing it to swell, stick together, and eventually collapse. Over time (usually a few weeks to months), the treated veins are reabsorbed by the body and fade from sight, improving the skin’s appearance.

The procedure is typically performed in an outpatient setting and takes 15–45 minutes, depending on the number of veins being treated. No anesthesia is required, as discomfort is minimal, often described as a mild stinging or cramping sensation. After treatment, patients may be advised to wear compression stockings for a short period to support healing and optimize results. Most individuals can resume normal activities immediately, though strenuous exercise or sun exposure may be restricted for a few days.

Sclerotherapy is suitable for most adults with spider or small varicose veins, but a consultation is essential to assess candidacy, as certain conditions (e.g., pregnancy or active blood clots) may require alternative approaches. Side effects are rare and typically mild, including temporary bruising, redness, or slight swelling at the injection site. With a high success rate and visible results, sclerotherapy is a trusted choice for achieving smoother, more confident legs.

What to Expect During Treatment

Before your procedure, our practitioners will conduct a thorough consultation to evaluate your veins, discuss your goals, and review your medical history to ensure sclerotherapy is right for you. During the treatment:

  • The targeted area is cleaned, and a fine needle is used to inject the sclerosing solution into the veins.

  • You may feel a mild stinging or cramping sensation during injections, but this typically subsides quickly.

  • Multiple veins may be treated in one session, depending on the extent of the condition.

  • After the procedure, you may be fitted with compression stockings to promote blood flow and prevent complications.

Post-Treatment Care

To ensure the best results, follow these guidelines after sclerotherapy:

  • Wear Compression Stockings: These should be worn for 1–3 weeks, as advised, to support vein closure and reduce swelling.

  • Avoid Strenuous Activity: Refrain from heavy exercise or prolonged standing for 2–5 days to aid healing.

  • Limit Sun Exposure: Protect treated areas from direct sunlight to prevent hyperpigmentation.

  • Follow-Up: Some patients may require multiple sessions (typically 2–4) for optimal results, spaced 4–6 weeks apart, depending on the severity of the veins.

Potential Risks and Side Effects

While sclerotherapy is generally safe, minor side effects may include:

  • Temporary bruising, redness, or swelling at the injection site.

  • Mild itching or tenderness, which usually resolves within a few days.

  • Rarely, hyperpigmentation or the formation of tiny new veins (matting) may occur, but these often fade over time or can be treated. Serious complications, such as allergic reactions or blood clots, are extremely rare but will be discussed during your consultation to ensure your safety.

Who is a Candidate?

Sclerotherapy is ideal for individuals with spider veins or small varicose veins who are in good general health. It is not recommended for:

  • Pregnant or breastfeeding women.

  • Individuals with a history of blood clots or certain vascular conditions.

  • Those with allergies to sclerosing agents. Our team will assess your eligibility and may recommend alternative treatments, such as laser therapy, if sclerotherapy is not suitable.

Benefits of Sclerotherapy

  • Cosmetic Improvement: Sclerotherapy effectively reduces or eliminates the appearance of spider veins and small varicose veins, resulting in clearer, more even-toned skin.

  • Minimally Invasive: The procedure requires no incisions or general anesthesia, making it a low-risk option with minimal discomfort.

  • Quick Recovery: Most patients can return to daily activities immediately after treatment, with only minor restrictions for optimal healing.

  • High Success Rate: Studies show sclerotherapy is effective in treating 60–80% of targeted veins in a single session, with additional sessions improving outcomes for more extensive cases.

  • Boosted Confidence: By addressing visible veins, sclerotherapy helps patients feel more comfortable and confident in their appearance, whether wearing shorts, skirts, or swimsuits.
